In Utero SARS-CoV-2 Transmission Unlikely, but Neonates May Still be at Risk

In a biorepository study including 64 women with SARS-CoV-2 infection, no maternal viremia, placental infection, or vertical transmission of SARS-CoV-2 was observed, reported researchers in JAMA Network Open.

However, SARS-CoV-2 antibodies were found to transfer relatively inefficiently across the placenta in the third trimester, pointing that neonates whose mothers had COVID-19 during pregnancy may still be susceptible to the virus. Evidence from another study suggest that antibodies may transfer more efficiently with second-trimester infections.

Investigators stated that while low rates of maternal viremia and patterns of placental SARS-CoV-2 receptor distribution may explain the rarity of vertical transmission, reduced transplacental transfer of antibodies may leave neonates at risk for infection… (Medscape)
