Ancient India thwarted malaria at a time no other part of world had: Study

When the first humans started moving out of Africa some 350,000 years ago, they looked for dry areas — the savannah grasslands, the deserts of southwest Asia. Because tropical regions, while bountiful with food and water, were also home to malaria-carrying mosquitoes. So, why prehistoric humans entered India — where it was wet, warm and humid — about 70,000 years ago has puzzled scientists. But a new study offers an answer. The malarial parasite in prehistoric India is likely to have been the more benign variant. “Nor should we forget that India’s own medical system was able to take up the fight against diseases thousands of years ago, while in other malaria-affected areas of the world, a similarly effective, Ayurveda-like medicine system did not exist,” Dr Attila J Trájer, lead author of the study published in ‘Quaternary International’, told TOI. .... read more

Australia brings forward COVID-19 vaccine roll-out to early March

Australian health authorities are bringing forward the roll-out of COVID-19 vaccines by two weeks to early March, even as recent outbreaks in the country’s two largest cities appeared to stabilise. “We will continue to follow the safety and medical advice and will update our plans where new evidence or advice is available our number one priority is safety,” Health Minister Greg Hunt’s office said in an email, noting the roll-out had been progressively brought forward.

Scientists find that brain cancer is linked to tissue healing

The healing process that follows a brain injury could spur tumour growth when new cells generated to replace those lost to the injury are derailed by mutations, Toronto scientists have found. A brain injury can be anything from trauma to infection or stroke. The findings were made by an interdisciplinary team of researchers from the University of Toronto, The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) and the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre who are also on the pan-Canadian Stand Up To Cancer Canada Dream Team that focuses on a common brain cancer known as glioblastoma.

Covid-19 vaccine to reach Gurgaon by mid-January

The Covid-19 vaccine is expected to reach Gurgaon by mid-January, following which “2-2.5 lakh people” will receive the shot in the first phase, said health department officials. “We have created 37 cold chain points… a district vaccine store has also been set up in Pataudi, which can store 2 lakh-2.5 lakh vaccines. The district administration is completely prepared to administer the vaccine, and 181 locations have been identified for the purpose,” said Gurgaon Civil Surgeon Dr Virender Yadav
