GENEVA: Scientists at the World Health Organization warned Monday that mass vaccinations would not bring about herd immunity to the coronavirus this year, even as one leading producer boosted its production forecast. England meanwhile launched the first of its mass-inoculation sites in major cities, racing to get ahead of the rapid spread of a new strain of the disease there. Granules gets American drug regulators nod for diabetes management drug Metformin

NEW DELHI: Drug firm Granules India on Wednesday said it has received the US health regulators approval for Metformin Hydrochloride extended-release (ER) tablets, used in the management of type-2 diabetes. The approved product is the generic equivalent of Glumetza ER tablets, 500 mg and 1000 mg, of Bausch Health US LLC. The US Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) has granted final approval for the companys abbreviated new drug application (ANDA) for Metformin Hydrochloride extended-release tablets USP, 500 mg and 1000 mg, Granules said in a regulatory filing.

IPA in process of drafting pharmacist training modules for COVID-19 vaccination drive

To create the required talent pool of COVID-19 vaccinators in India, the Indian Pharmaceutical Association (IPA) is in the process of designing online and offline training modules for pharmacists. The aim is to help the Government of India in executing the COVID 19 vaccine drive across the country, informed the association. The association informed that it is in the process of framing the two-week training modules in consultation with international organisations and it is likely to be ready by mid-January 2021. IPA will share the draft guidelines with the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare for their guidance.

E-healthcare firms prepare for expanded vaccination

Digital healthcare platforms are expanding cold chain networks, training staff in vaccination, and even hoping to partner with large companies, despite the lack of clarity on the role of private sector in the mass immunization programme beginning 16 January. India aims to vaccinate 300 million citizens over the next few months, with healthcare workers the first in line. In the second stage, those above 50 years of age, and those below 50 but having co-morbidities or with a high risk of infection will be vaccinated. Identification and monitoring of those who need to be vaccinated will be done over Co-WIN, an online platform for real-time tracking of covid vaccine delivery and distribution.

Post Covid, recovered persons to be monitored in Pune rural

At least 77,000 persons recovered from Covid 19 from Pune rural will undergo screening from January till March for post -Covid symptoms, district health officials said. Experts from the City Covid 19 taskforce have designed a unique programme to prevent long term effects. Dr. D B Kadam, an expert from the task force said that community health officials will involve patients phase-wise.
