The type of liver disease dictates the nutritional management of the infant and child with liver disease. Although no specific nutritional therapy is needed for acute liver disease, secondary to viral hepatitis, branched-chain amino acid supplements may be indicated in the management of hepatic encephalopathy. Moreover, nutritional management of the child with chronic liver disease is based on the presence of cholestasis, as children with cholestasis warrant large amounts of fat-soluble vitamin supplements and medium-chain triglycerides for optimum growth. Other conditions such as anicteric cirrhotic liver disease offers several nutritional challenges due to hypermetabolism, enteropathy, and increased protein oxidation.

Besides, inborn errors of metabolism such as galactosemia, hepatorenal tyrosinemia, hereditary fructose intolerance, and Wilsons disease causing liver disease have specific nutritional requirements. Moreover, nutritional intervention has emerged as an important component of the liver transplantation treatment in pediatric patients as optimum nutritional status in the pretransplant period maximizes success of the transplant in child with chronic liver disease.
