Repeated Ketamine Infusions Associated with Rapid Relief of PTSD

A new study, published online in the American Journal of Psychiatry, has revealed that repeated intravenous infusions of ketamine yielded rapid relief among patients with post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

In the randomized controlled trial of repeated ketamine infusions among patients with chronic PTSD, 30 patients were given six infusions of ketamine or midazolam over 2 consecutive weeks. From baseline to week 2, patients who were given ketamine had significantly greater improvement compared to those who received midazolam. Total scores on the Clinician-Administered PTSD Scale for DSM-5 (CAPS-5) for those receiving ketamine were nearly 12 points lower compared to those given midazolam, at week 2.
