India reports 13.8k COVID-19 cases, Kerala contributing 45% of them

Kerala reported around 45% of the new cases of coronavirus infections in the country on Tuesday. The state had recorded 6,186 positive cases and is the second highest single-day count in January 2021. India had reported 13,821 new coronavirus infections in the country on Tuesday.

For the first time from 26th June 2020, the total count of active COVID-19 cases in India had fallen below the 2-lakh mark on Tuesday. Several states continued to report more recoveries than fresh cases.

On Tuesday, Kerala and Maharashtra together contributed above 61% of India’s total case count. Maharashtra recorded 2,294 new cases and the total count has dropped in the last few days but the coronavirus pandemic continues to upsurge in Kerala.

The test positivity rate in Kerala had reached at 9.34%. The state government mentioned that the count of the active COVID-19 cases had crossed 70,000 and the state has reported 4,296 recoveries.

On Tuesday, 160 deaths were recorded due to coronavirus infection, which was higher than the total count in the earlier two days, as 145 and 131 fatalities were reported. Maharashtra reported the highest number of deaths at 50 and was followed by Kerala (26 deaths), Bengal (11 deaths), Delhi and Chhattisgarh (both 10 deaths).

Kerala and Maharashtra are the only two states to record new cases in four figures on Tuesday. Karnataka is the third highest state with 645 cases, followed by Tamil Nadu (543 cases), Bengal (412 cases) and Gujarat (485 cases). In all these states, the coronavirus pandemic seems to drop as daily numbers of cases are declining.

Maharashtra and Mumbai reported a marginal upsurge in daily coronavirus cases, a day after reporting the lowest cases in more than 250 days. Mumbai recorded 473 cases and total 8 fatalities. The total number of cases in Mumbai are 3,03,625 and the total fatalities are at 11,259.

The Centre has highlighted that Maharashtra has the second highest active cases in India after Kerala. Delhi reported a decline in cases with 231 fresh COVID-19 infections and 10 deaths on Tuesday.
