Antibody drug might help prevent COVID-19

The antibody drug bamlanivimab may prevent COVID-19 illness in residents and staff of nursing homes and other long-term care facilities, stated drugmaker Eli Lilly recently.

The company revealed that residents and staff who were given the drug had up to 57% decreased risk of getting COVID-19 in comparison with others at the same facility who were given a placebo. The risk was decreased by up to 80% among nursing home residents only. The study recruited over 1,000 residents and staff at nursing homes and other long-term care facilities and a large proportion of the individuals tested negative at study initiation.
