On Tuesday, Minister of State for Health Ashwini Kumar Choubey told Rajya Sabha that COVID-19 has claimed the lives of 162 doctors, 107 nurses along with 44 ASHA workers in the countryup to now. The figures are totally based on the suggestions received from the states till 22nd January.

This was in response to a question related to the number of healthcare staff, which included doctors, nurses and ASHA workers who died due to COVID-19 disease.

On the query whether the available data was presented by the Indian Medical Association about the number of healthcare workers died due to COVID-19 has been taken note by the Ministry and any further follow up confirmation of it has been done, Choubey said that the procedure of insurance disbursement has been de-centralized below the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Package.

Therefore, the verification of a person who is affected and died to COVID-19 will be with State or Central government authorities concerned. The required certification for the claims is done by a healthcare organization, institution or office where the deceased worker was an employee of the institution. They should then submit the documents to the concerned authority for state and UT, or the concerned authority for Central Government, INIs, AIIMS, Central Autonomous /PSU hospitals and hospitals of other central ministries, as per the cases.

The concerned authorities shall forward and submit the claims to the insurance company.
