Rheumatologic Disease Activity Affects COVID-19 Death Risk

Patients with rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases (RMDs) infected with COVID-19, with poorly controlled rheumatologic condition at the time of contracting the infection, seem to have higher odds of death from COVID-19, suggest new data.

Findings from the COVID-19 Global Rheumatology Alliance (GRA) physician registry suggest that those who had moderate to high disease activity had 87% higher likelihood of dying from COVID-19, compared to those who were in remission or had low disease activity. Other factors that were tied to increased odds of death from COVID-19 included older age, male gender, and presence of one or more comorbidities, such as hypertension in association with cardiovascular disease or chronic lung disease.
