South Africa, Brazil variants identified in India

India has reported the identification of South African and Brazilianmutant variants of coronavirus in the country, besides the UK variantidentified in 187 individuals thus far.

Director-general of the Indian Council of Medical Research, BalramBhargava, stated that the South Africa variant of SARS-CoV-2 was detected in fourpersons in the country in January. One person tested positive for the Brazilvariant in the first week of February. All of the five patients have beenquarantined.

The South Africa variant has been detected in returnees from Angola (1),Tanzania (1) and South Africa (2).

Talking about the measures put in place to check the entry of mutatedstrains (South Africa/Brazil) into the country, health secretary Rajesh Bhushanmentioned that flights from South Africa and Brazil have been routed throughGulf countries… (ET Healthworld – TNN, February 17, 2021)
