COVID-19outbreak to affect 2021 as well, says health expert

Mumbai: An epidemiology andcommunicable diseases expert has predicted that the COVID-19 outbreak could bearound all through 2021. Speaking during a panel discussion on a Marathi newschannel, Dr Raman Gangakhedkar, former Head Scientist of Epidemiology andCommunicable Diseases at Indian Council of Medical Research called the outbreaksituation "complicated". "If anyone is under the illusion thatthe COVID-19 phase will end anytime soon, then they are mistaken. Humidity from masks may reduce COVID-19 severity, suggestresearchers

1.NationalInstitutes ofHealth state that humidity inside a face mask may help fightrespiratorydiseases, like COVID-19.

2.Researchers at the NIH’sNational Institute of Diabetes and Digestiveand Kidney Diseases (NIDDK)conducted a study which revealed that face masks considerablyincrease thehumidity in the air that the wearer inhales. The increasedhumidity in inhaledair could account for the link between mask wearing and lowerdisease severityin those with SARS-CoV-2 infection. Hydration of therespiratory tract appearsto benefit the immune system. The findings have beenpublished in theBiophysical Journal.

3.Lead author, Adriaan Baxstated that face masks were found to enhancethe humidity in inhaled air andsuggested that the hydration of the respiratorytract could explain theassociation between lower COVID-19 disease severity andwearing a mask. He addedthat high levels of humidity lessen the severity offlu, and the same may holdtrue for severity of COVID-19.

Fujifilm to restart clinical trialof Avigan to treat COVID-19 - media

TOKYO: Fujifilm HoldingsCorp will restart a clinical trial in Japan of its antiviral drug Avigan forthe treatment of COVID-19, the Nikkei newspaper reported on Sunday. Domesticapproval of the drug was delayed after a health ministry panel said in Decemberthat trial data was inconclusive. The new study will involve about 270 patientsand Fujifilm will aim to seek approval again in October, Nikkei said.Representatives from Fujifilm did not immediately respond to a request forcomment.

China has approved clinicaltrials for 16 indigenous COVID-19 vaccines, of which six are in the thirdstage, according to a state-run media report. The latest vaccines for clinicaltrials are based on recombinant protein, adenovirus vector, nucleic acid andattenuated influenza-viruses technologies, state-run Xinhua news agencyreported, citing data from the National Medical Products Administration. Chinahas already given conditional approval to two inactivated COVID-19 vaccinesmade by state-owned developers — Sinopharm and Sinovac Biotech.

Coronavirus India LiveUpdates: Kerala, Maharashtra, Punjab, Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh haverecorded an “upsurge” in daily new cases of COVID-19, the Union Health Ministrysaid on Saturday. The ministry said Punjab has reported 383 new cases in thelast 24 hours while Chhattisgarh has reported 259 new cases and MP has reported297 new cases in the same time period. India on Saturday reported 13,993 newCovid-19 cases, bringing the total tally of cases in the country to1,09,77,387, according to data from the Union Health Ministry. With 101 deathsin the last 24 hours, the death toll reached 1,56,212.
