COVID cases surge for first time in seven weeks, says WHO

After recording a fall for six weeks in a row, COVID-19 cases across the globe increased last week for the first time, reported the World Health Organization (WHO). 

Four of the six WHO regions recorded a surge in cases, with the exception of Africa and the Western Pacific. WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that though this was disappointing, it was not surprising. He added that it seems to be occurring due to relaxations in public health measures, variants circulating, and people letting their guard down. 

He cautioned that while vaccines can help save lives, depending solely on vaccines will be a mistake. He stated that public health measures, including testing, contact tracing, wearing masks and avoiding crowded places was important…(UN, March 1, 2021)
