Children Hospitalized with COVID-19 often have Neurologic Symptoms

A large case series of pediatric patients in the U.S. has shown that neurologic symptoms occurred frequently in children and adolescents hospitalized with COVID-19.

Among 1,695 people aged 21 years or below hospitalized for acute COVID-19 or multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C), about 22% had neurologic involvement, reported researchers in JAMA Neurology. Most symptoms were transient; however, 12% of the children with neurologic involvement went on to develop life-threatening neurologic disorders. Neurologic symptoms associated with COVID-19 varied by age. The symptoms ranged from seizures or status epilepticus in younger patients to anosmia, ageusia, headache, fatigue, and weakness in the older age group.
