The Global Technical Strategy for Malaria 2016–2030 was adopted by the World Health Assembly in May 2015. It provides a comprehensive framework to guide countries towards malaria elimination. It aims at reducing global malaria incidence and mortality rates by 90% by 2030.

The strategy emphasizes the need for universal coverage of core malaria interventions for all populations at risk and highlights the importance of using high-quality surveillance data for decision-making. It also identifies areas where innovative solutions will be essential for attaining the goals, and summarizes the estimated global costs of implementation.

The 15-year WHO strategy aims to guide and support nations working towards controlling and eradicating malaria. The strategy sets 4 global targets for 2030, besides interim milestones to track the progress. The latest edition of the World malaria report indicates that progress towards two of the 2020 milestones has gone astray – reduction in global mortality rates and case incidence by at least 40%. It is expected that the other two milestones directed towards country-level elimination and prevention of re-establishment of malaria will be attained.
