GACVS COVID-19 Vaccine Safety subcommittee meets to review reports on influenza-like illness in people vaccinated with COVID-19 vaccines

The GACVS COVID-19 Subcommittee convened virtually to review the information available on reports of influenza-like illness in healthcare workers who were vaccinated with the COVID-19 vaccines. 

It was noted that similar symptoms of influenza-like illness had been reported in the first few days after vaccination with COVID-19 vaccines in clinical trials as well. The symptoms included headache, fatigue, muscle aches, feverishness and chills. Most symptoms were mild to moderate and there was resolution of symptoms within a few days. These expected side effects from vaccination were more frequent in younger people (below 55 years of age) compared with older people. The Subcommittee concluded that the symptoms of an influenza-like illness may be expected as immune responses after vaccination in general, and that the reports with the COVID-19 vaccines are conforming with the expected side-effect profile of the vaccines… (WHO, March 8, 2021)
