CDC finds COVID-19 prompted 15% increase in U.S. death rate in 2020

A study by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has noted that 2020 was the deadliest in U.S. history, with COVID-19 driving a 15% surge in deaths, Politico reported.

Last year, more than 3 million people died in the United States, with COVID-19 being the third leading cause of death, after heart disease and cancer. The CDC will report the findings in an upcoming issue of Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report. Over 117.6 million individuals have been infected by COVID-19 worldwide and 2,736,909 have died so far, reported a Reuters tally. The U.S. has recorded the highest number of deaths from the disease in the world, standing at more than 528,000 fatalities, and has recorded over 29 million cases… (Reuters, March 11, 2021)
