India's weekly COVID-19 cases count upsurges by 33% since July

India has recorded the highest number of new COVID-19 cases since mid-December and has registered a sharp 33% upsurge in the past week. Deaths from the coronavirus have also risen by 28% to a six-week high of 876 from March 8-15.

In total numbers, approximately 1.56 lakh (1,55,912) COVID-19 cases are recorded in the last seven days, which is the highest in 12 weeks since 14-20 December. The total number of weekly case counts has doubled in the last four weeks since the second wave of the pandemic has begun in the country. 

On Sunday, the spike in infections continued with 26,386 new cases, which is the highest single-day in 85 days since 19th December.

The total number of COVID-19 cases reported in the March 8-15 week were 38,714 cases making it the highest weekly upsurge in cases since 7-13 September. The weekly number of cases in the country had dropped to its lowest since June 8-14 last year and in the February 8-14 week. Since then, the cases are steadily increasing. The death count in this week is 876 and is the highest since 975 deaths were reported in the January 25-31 week.

Indias total COVID-19 count of 11,385,519 has put it at the 3rd place in the world and is overtaken by Brazil as it is recording the highest daily number of positive cases for several weeks. Maharashtra reported one bigger spike, with 16,620 new cases on Sunday. This was Maharashtras highest single-day total count since 30th September.

On Sunday, coronavirus cases continued to increase in six other states. Karnataka reported 934 fresh cases, the highest since 8th January. Bengaluru Urban alone reported 628 cases. Gujarat reported 810 cases, the highest since 27th December.

The total count of cases in Tamil Nadu was 759, in Madhya Pradesh 743 cases, Andhra Pradesh 298 cases, Bengal 283 cases and Rajasthan 250 cases. Punjab recorded 1,501 fresh cases. 119 deaths were reported from across the country in the last 24 hours.
