Data from the American Heart Associations COVID-19 Cardiovascular Disease Registry, which included over 20,000 US adults hospitalized with COVID-19 between March and November 2020, has revealed an overall rate of ischemic stroke of 0.75%.

While the rate appears to be lower than earlier estimates of risk of ischemic stroke with severe COVID-19, it is higher than that observed in other infections, like influenza or sepsis. Patients with ischemic stroke while hospitalized for COVID-19 had double the odds of death compared to those who did not have a stroke. The data were presented at the virtual International Stroke Conference (ISC) 2021.
