In this pandemic, when the country are praising the heroism of frontline workers, a nurse who contracted the coronavirus infection was told by her husband to pay Rs 10 lakh for continuing to stay with him.

The woman, aged 27 years, is from the Isanpur area of the Ahmedabad city, has filed a complaint with Khokhra police on Saturday alleging that her husband had abandoned her when she got infected with COVID-19 in April 2020.

She is a nurse by profession at LG Hospital in Maninagar and mentioned in her FIR that she married the Khokhra man on 24th February 2020. Soon after the marriage, the woman’s husband and in-laws started to harass her. The woman’s husband and in-laws did not want her to continue work as a nurse due to the fear that she might bring the infection at home.

She said that one-and-a-half months after her marriage; coronavirus pandemic started to spread across the city. She continued to attend patients at the hospital and in due course got the infection herself. She complained that her husband asked her to get Rs 10 lakh from her parents if she wants to live with him.

She tried to compromise with the involvement of the family members but her sister-in-law, who is also a nurse, asked her to bring a fresh COVID-negative report. But the complainant refused to take any further test, so her husband and in-laws told her to file for divorce. Her husband did return for her for approximately six months and then she approached the police and filed a complaint regarding the dowry demand and harassment.
