The first person in Uttar Pradesh to test positive for COVID-19 even after completing the two-dose course was a Lucknow-based doctor. An emergency medical officer named Nitin Mishra, working at the Civil hospital was vaccinated with Covaxin on 15th February and then on 16th March.

He developed a severe cough with mild fever on 18th March and got himself tested on 20th March. On Sunday, the report was revealed that he was COVID-19 positive. He isolated himself at home as he had only mild symptoms and was regularly monitoring his blood pressure along with the blood oxygen levels.

Subhash Chandra Sundariyal, director at Civil hospital, said that they are in touch with him and if symptoms aggravate then he will be hospitalized. The whole hospital is sanitized and services are also continuing normally

Director general of medical health, D.S. Negi also confirmed that Nitin Mishras case is the first recorded case in which a person has contracted COVID-19 and turned symptomatic after completing the two-dose course of Covaxin vaccine.

He said that data has shown that the efficacy of Covaxin is approximately 80-90 percent. The vaccine doesn’t act as a shield against the coronavirus infection, but it protects a person from the severity. Therefore, people should take the vaccine, if they are medically fit.

Prof Amita Jain, head of the microbiology department at King Georges Medical University, said that it takes a few weeks after completion of the vaccine course, to build the full immunity against the coronavirus disease. In this period, an individual can get infected and develop symptoms.
