  1. Several mechanisms and mediators have been proposed including mitochondrial membrane permeability transition as the reason for apoptosis.
  2. Animal studies have shown promise in reducing reperfusion injury with few agents such as cyclosporine and Bendavia. However, translation of these agents into humans have not been possible so far.
  3. Hence prevention is better than cure for myocardial reperfusion injury and one should make every attempt in opening up the occluded artery as soon as possible.
