On Wednesday morning, panic was seen at Safdarjung Hospital in New Delhi as a fire broke out in the intensive care unit (ICU) that is on the first floor of H Block. Almost 50 patients were evacuated from the ICU. According to the fire officials, no one was injured in the fire incident. The fire possibly started due to the high voltage fluctuation causing a short circuit.

The occurrence was reported to Delhi Fire Service at 6.30 am by the hospital authorities. DFS director Atul Garg said that when their firefighters reached the hospital spot, they found that a short circuit in a ventilator machine had caused fire with a lot of smoke in the first-floor ward. The H block is a three-storey building and the hospital staff reported that 8 patients were inside the ICU. The firemen rushed inside and all the eight patients were evacuated with the help of hospital staff.

The fire chief said that almost nine fire tenders reached the spot to contain the blaze. As the firefighters tried to contain the blaze, approximately forty firemen were roped in to carry out this huge rescue operation. With the hospital staff’s help, they managed to shift more than 50 patients, who were in wards next to the ICU. They were shifted to other floors to save them from getting suffocated from the fire. They were attended by the doctors and are doing fine.
