China considers mixing of COVID-19 vaccines to increase protection rate

A top disease control official in China has said that they are considering mixing COVID-19 vaccines in order to boost vaccine efficacy.

According to the available data, Chinese vaccines seem to have lower efficacy than other vaccines, including Pfizer and Moderna, but they need less stringent temperature controls for storage. Gao Fu, director of the Chinese Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said that administering doses of different vaccines is a way to improve vaccines which do not have very high protection rates. 

Vaccinating with vaccines of different technical lines was under consideration, he stated, adding that changing the number of doses and the duration between doses was also a solution to efficacy issues… (Reuters, April 11, 2021)
