IMA reported 747 doctors succumbed to COVID-19 in India

Approximately 747 doctors have succumbed to COVID-19, stated the national registry of Indian Medical Association (IMA).Dr Jayesh Lele, who is a secretary general of IMA, said that according to the IMA registry, the highest number of deaths of doctors were from Tamil Nadu (89 deaths) and West Bengal (80 deaths).

The IMA has done a state-wise analysis of COVID-19 deaths recently and as per their data, 74 doctors died in Maharashtra while 70 doctors died in Andhra Pradesh. 66 doctors died in Uttar Pradesh and 68 doctors died in Karnataka, whereas 62 doctors died in Gujarat. 40 doctors died in Bihar and 22 doctors each in Delhi and Madhya Pradesh. Also, 20 doctors each have died in Assam and Punjab.

An analysis was done by the state health department showing that in Maharashtra, 17, 975 health workers are infected with COVID-19, out of them 11,235 are from government hospitals and 6,740 workers are from the private sector.

State surveillance officer, Dr Pradeep Awate said that a total number of 178 healthcare workers have died due to coronavirus infection in Maharashtra. Out of these, 107 deaths were reported from government-run healthcare facilities whereas 71 deaths were reported from private facilities. Dr Awate said that out of these, there were 48 doctors and 10 nurses, and 120 were other healthcare employees, including paramedics also. The state reported 34 deaths of doctors in the private sector, while 14 deaths at government-run hospitals and healthcare facilities. 7 nurses have succumbed to coronavirus infection at government healthcare facilities and 3 nurses have died in the private sector healthcare facilities.

Out of 5,913 doctors who are infected with coronavirus infection in the state, 3,095 doctors are from government healthcare facilities. A total number of 4,217 nurses are infected, out of which 2,649 nurses are from government-run facilities. The remaining 7,845 infected are mostly paramedical employees and others.
