U.S. COVID-19 cases rise, hospitalizations up for second consecutive week

The United States recorded an 8% increase in new COVID-19 cases to 490,000 last week.This is the fourth straight week that infections have increased, suggests a Reuters analysis of state and county data.

In the week ended April 11, Michigan recorded the highest number of new cases per capita among all 50 states and led the country in hospitalizations per capita as well. Close to 39% of new cases in Michigan were due to the more contagious B.1.1.7 coronavirus variant first identified in the United Kingdom, representing the highest percentage in the U.S., as per CDC data obtained over a four-week period ending March 13. The average number of COVID-19 hospitalizations increased by 6% to over 39,000, registering a rise for a second consecutive week… (Reuters, April 20, 2021)
