After death of COVID patient, relatives assault hospital staff in Pune

On Monday, a 28-year-old man succumbed to COVID-19 at the Dehu Road Cantonment Hospital in Pune. His family members and relatives assaulted three hospital staff workers and also vandalised the premises. One of the hospital’s doctor has lodged an FIR regarding this matter.

Dehu Road police officials said that the man was earlier taking treatment for COVID-19 at a hospital in Pimpri Chinchwad and he was discharged a few days back. He was prescribed a set of medicines to be taken at home after discharge.

From Monday morning, his oxygen level suddenly started dropping hastily and he was rushed to the Dehu Road cantonment hospital.

A police officer said that his oxygen level was dangerously low when he was brought to the hospital. The doctors were making bed arrangements for him and he suddenly became unconscious and later was declared dead. Almost 25 to 30 people were present with the patient and they created ruckus at the hospital at 2 pm on Monday.

According to the First Information Report (FIR) filed by a doctor from the hospital, at least 10 to 12 people assaulted two ward boys and the hospital’s watchman who tried to control the group of relatives of the deceased patient. The group vandalised and broke window panes on the hospital premises.

Vilas Sonde, Senior inspector, who is in-charge of Dehu Road police station, said that they have filed an offence of 25 to 30 people, out of whom 8 people are identified. Till now no arrests were made.

The offence isn registered under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections relating to unlawful assembly, riot, assault on public servants and criminal fear among others.
