India records 2.94 lakh new COVID cases, 2nd highest ever record globally

On Tuesday, India recorded more than 2.94 lakh new COVID-19 cases. This is the 2nd highest a single day case count recorded by any other country. The days death count has crossed 2,000 for the first time since the outbreak of the pandemic.

On Tuesday, the national case count of new cases was 2,94,291 almost three times higher than the peak of 98,795 cases that were recorded on 17th September. Only once USA reported a higher count of COVID-19 cases in a day, which was 3,07,570 cases on 8th January 2021, as per worldometers.info.

Positivity rates are very high at 19% nationally, which indicates that the daily total count might cross 3 lakh cases soon. Delhis positivity rate is above 32%, whereas 25% in West Bengal, and over 20% in Maharashtra and Jharkhand.

Total number of deaths are also rising sharply. On Tuesday, the death count reached a record of 2,021 deaths with Maharashtra reporting 519 deaths, Delhi 277 deaths, Chhattisgarh 191 deaths, Uttar Pradesh 162 deaths, Karnataka 149 deaths and Gujarat 121 deaths. It was the 1st time that the death count in six states was more than 100.

In India, 34 lakh (3.4 million) COVID-19 cases were recorded in April, which is the highest for any month. Above half of these active cases, 17.4 lakh, were reported in the last 7 days alone. During this period, India had accounted for 30% of all global coronavirus cases and has the highest 7-day growth rate (62%) for any major COVID-hit country in the whole world.

On Tuesday, almost 15 states and Union territories had recorded their highest single-day upsurge in new cases. The leading states are Delhi, with 28,395 fresh cases, Karnataka (21,794 new cases), Kerala (19,577 cases), Gujarat (12,206 cases), Rajasthan (12,201 cases), Tamil Nadu (10,986 cases), Bihar (10,455 cases), Bengal (9,819 cases), Telangana (5,926 cases), Haryana (7,811 cases), Jharkhand (4,969 cases), Odisha (4,761 cases), J&K (2,030 cases) Uttarakhand (3,012 cases) and Goa (1,160 cases).

Few major states were close due to their highest single-day count. Maharashtra has reported 62,097 new cases, with Mumbais total count at 7,192 cases. 519 deaths were recorded in Maharashtra, the highest countin a single day, 515 deaths were recorded on 15th September.

Coronavirus cases continued to increase in Uttar Pradesh with 29,754 fresh cases being recorded. Chhattisgarh reported 15,625 news cases, which is the states 2nd highest daily count after 16,083 cases reported on Saturday.
