RTS,S malaria vaccine reaches over 650 000 children in Ghana, Kenya, Malawi

Two years since the launch of a pilot program, over 1.7 million doses of the world’s first malaria vaccine have now been administered in Ghana, Kenya and Malawi, helping over 650 000 children with added protection against malaria.

During a time when the progress in malaria control has been impeded on a global level, the protection provided by the vaccine, in conjunction with the recommended malaria control interventions, can potentially save thousands of lives every year. RTS,S is the first and only vaccine known to decrease malaria in children, including life-threatening severe malaria, hospital admissions as well as the requirement of blood transfusions… (WHO, April 20, 2021)
