Patients admitted to a hospital with COVID-19 exhibited increased odds of presence of heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) that was tied to cardiac structural and functional alterations, as well as myocardial injury, reported a new study.

The study recruited 64 hospitalized COVID-19 patients with left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) ≥50% and without known heart failure. A control group of 64 non-COVID-19 patients matched for sex, age, and comorbidity was also included in the study. The HFA-PEFF score helped assess the odds of presence of HFpEF. Around 42% of COVID-19 patients demonstrated a low HFA-PEFF score, 33% had an intermediate score, while 25% had a high HFA-PEFF score. The corresponding figures in control patients were 30%, 66%, and 4%, respectively. High HFA-PEFF scores were therefore more prevalent in COVID-19 patients compared to controls. The study is published in the European Journal of Heart Failure… (DG Alerts)
