Mixing COVID-19 vaccines increases reports of mild side-effects

It is more likely for adults to report mild and moderate side-effects after doses of the AstraZeneca and Pfizer COVID-19 vaccines are mixed, suggested a new study.

Chills, headaches and muscle pain were more often reported when different vaccine doses were combined. 

The Com-Cov study was started in February to determine if a second dose with a different vaccine might yield longer-lasting immunity, improved protection against new variants or simply allow clinics to swap vaccines if supplies are scarce. Led by the University of Oxford, the study included 830 volunteers aged above 50 years. Preliminary data published in the Lancet suggest that while 1 in 10 volunteers receiving two AstraZeneca doses four weeks apart reported feverishness, the figure increased to about 34% if they received one AstraZeneca dose and one Pfizer dose, in any order. The same applied to other symptoms including chills, fatigue, headache, malaise and muscle ache, stated Prof Snape, trials chief investigator… (BBC, May 13, 2021)
