Indian Medical Association (IMA) has revealed the latest data that as many as 244 Indian doctors have lost their lives in the ongoing second wave of COVID-19 pandemic. A stunning count of 50 deaths were recorded in a single day which is creating chaos across the country.

The youngest fatality was on 9th May of Dr Anas Mujahid who was working in Delhi government-run GTB Hospital. The 25-year-old junior resident suffered an intracranial haemorrhage after testing positive for the COVID-19 and passed away within hours. The oldest fatality recorded was of Dr S Satyamurthy, retired as a professor of ENT. He was 90-year-old and was based in Vishakhapattanam.

The majority of the doctors who died in this second wave were aged above 50 years but there is a substantial number who were under 45 years of age. The highest number of fatalities are from Bihar as almost 69 doctors lost their lives to the coronavirus infection and is followed by Uttar Pradesh (33 deaths) and Delhi (26 deaths).

Dr JA Jayalal, President of IMA said that the 2nd wave is extremely fatal for everyone and especially for those who are heading on to the coronavirus.Jayalal said that only 3 percent of the deceased doctors had taken the COVID-19 vaccines. The vaccination was shockingly low among the doctors they have lost and only 3% of doctors had taken the vaccine shots.

Last year, in the 1st wave, more than 730 doctors across India had died across the country according to the IMA data but the Union government had maintained that it did not track the numbers in response to several questions asked in the Parliament.
