Weekly COVID-19 cases in India fall for first time in 2nd wave

For the first time during the second wave of COVID-19 infections in India, the country recorded a decline in cases in the week that ended on Sunday, with the infection rate coming down in several states. 

Deaths; however, continued to rise as the total fatalities during the week crossed 28,000, representing the highest number of deaths in a span of seven days anywhere across the globe for the second week in a row. More than 24 lakh new COVID-19 cases were registered during the week, with a fall of 16% compared to the previous week’s number of 27.4 lakh cases. The case count during the week May 10-16 was the lowest in three weeks, indicating a steep fall in daily case numbers after reaching a peak in the previous week… (ET Healthworld – TNN, May 17, 2021)
