Long working hours increasing deaths from heart disease, stroke

Most recent estimates by the World Health Organization and the International Labour Organization indicate that long working hours resulted in 745,000 deaths from stroke and ischemic heart disease in 2016, representing a 29% rise since 2000.

WHO and ILO estimate that in 2016, 398,000 individuals lost their lives due to stroke and 347,000 died from heart disease because of having worked at least 55 hours a week. From 2000 through 2016, the number of deaths from heart disease accountable to long working hours escalated by 42%, and those from stroke increased by 19%. The analysis, published in Environment International, concluded that working 55 or more hours a week is tied to around 35% higher risk of stroke and a 17% greater risk of dying from ischemic heart disease, in comparison with working 35-40 hours a week… (WHO, May 17, 2021)
