It has been suggested that the patients with kidney disease who are at a much higher risk for COVID 19 are individuals with a kidney transplant, due to immunosuppression, and those who undergo in-center haemodialysis treatments thrice weekly, due to inability to self-isolate. Since, patients with kidney disease also have other comorbidities, including hypertension, diabetes mellitus (DM), and cardiovascular disease. Hypertension, DM are also the risk factors for poor outcomes in COVID-19.

Another report has demonstrated that people hospitalized with COVID-19 are at a considerably higher risk of acute kidney injury, which may eventually result in serious illness, dialysis, and even deaths. This study reported that patients hospitalized with COVID 19 who developed acute kidney injury (AKI) as compared to non-COVID patients who developed AKI during the same time period in 2019-56.9% versus 25.1% respectively. AKI appears to be a marker of COVID 19 infection severity, and the mortality rate is higher for these patients. Most patients with COVID 19 related AKI who recover have persisting low kidney function even after discharge from the hospital.
