Final SPRINT Data: Lower BP is Better

Final data from the Systolic Blood Pressure Intervention Trial (SPRINT) confirm that aggressive blood pressure (BP) management, with target systolic blood pressure (SBP) <120 mmHg, leads to a significant reduction in the risk for heart disease, stroke, and death from these diseases, and death from all causes.

Overall, 9361 adults aged 50 years and above with a SBP 130-180 mmHg who were at increased risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD) but without a history of diabetes or stroke were recruited in the trial. Patients were randomized to an intensive treatment target (SBP < 120 mm Hg) or a standard treatment target (SBP < 140 mm Hg). The final analysis revealed that the rate of the primary outcome was 1.77% per year in the intensive-treatment group and 2.40% per year in the standard-treatment group, which is similar to the previous SPRINT findings. In addition, all-cause mortality was 1.06% per year in the intensive-treatment group and 1.41% per year in the standard-treatment group, which was also similar to the previous findings… (Medscape)
