Sudden Hearing Loss Reported After COVID-19 Vaccination

A preliminary analysis published in JAMA Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery revealed that sudden sensorineural hearing loss was reported after people were administered COVID-19 vaccines; however, it appeared to occur less frequently than anticipated.

Incidence estimates of sudden sensorineural hearing loss following COVID-19 vaccination varied between 0.3 and 4.1 per 100,000 per year as per Vaccine Adverse Events Reporting System (VAERS) data. According to the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, sudden sensorineural hearing loss is estimated to affect 5 to 27 per 100,000 people every year, with nearly 66,000 new cases per year in the U.S.

In VAERS, investigators noted 147 reports of sudden hearing loss, deafness, deafness unilateral, deafness neurosensory, and hypoacusis linked to COVID vaccinations between December 14, 2020 and March 2, 2021. Of these, 40 had a temporal association, where hearing loss onset was noted within 3 weeks of vaccination, and high credibility (reported by a clinician with known audiologic findings or steroid treatment)… (Medpage Today)
