When should a treating doctor seek a consultation?

Unnecessary consultations should be avoided as per Regulation 3.1. However, when there is a serious illness and when there is a doubtful or difficult condition, the physician can request consultation.Under any situation, such a consultation should be justifiable and in the patient’s interest only and not for any other consideration (Regulation 3.1.1). 

Consulting pathologists/radiologists or ordering any other diagnostic lab investigation should be undertaken judiciously and not routinely (Regulation 3.1.2). 

In every consultation, the benefit to the patient is the most important. All physicians involved in the case should be frank with the patient and his attendants (Regulation 3.2).
