A recent article published in Biomedical Microdevices discussed that derma roller or microneedlingis extensively used for cosmetic purposes to create micropores, which are utilized either to induce collagen production—for wrinkle reduction, or for facilitating the permeation of formulations within the skin.

The authors reported that current evidence confirmsthat the use of derma rollers aid in transdermal delivery of drugs. This approach successfully breaches the stratum corneum and enables the transport of medications directed towards the dermis and hair follicles.

Derma rollers enhance epidermal preservation by stimulating the production of collagen and elastin. Responses to derma roller use on skin repair at a cellular level are still under study. The effectiveness, safety and accessibility of derma rollers make them a successful therapeutic option. Moreover, the use of derma roller technologies to facilitate the efficient delivery and absorption of pharmaceuticals is rapidly advancing.
