The use of oral rehydration solution (ORS) for treatment of diarrhea in children, is a very cost-effective intervention. However, the frequency remains below 50% in many countries.

The purpose of a recent study published in the Journal of Global Health was toreveal important predictors of ORS use at the national level through a multi-level longitudinal model.

The results suggested that increasing government effectiveness along with increased implementation and affordability of community-based health programs can aid in encouraging ORS use. These qualitative findings are supported by key informant interviews with national health leaders in countries that significantly improved ORS coverage.

In summary, it was stated that ORS coverage can help prevent many child deaths. One method of increasing ORS coverage isreinstating known approaches to improving maternal and child health, and improved governance. Effective and affordable community health programs can play a vital role in improving the coverage of cost-effective child health services.
