A recent study published in Nutrients aimed to clarify recommended fluid intake for older people.

This was a critical review that entailed a literature search of published articles and guidelines on fluid intake recommendations until April 2020—from PUBMED, Scopus, Cochrane, and Google Scholar. The review focused on individuals above the age of 65 years – at different care levels.

The findings revealed that the mean fluid intake ranged between 311-2390 mL/day. It was observed that most international organizations do not take into consideration the physiology of ageing or the health problems associated with an older population.

Hence, the guidelines of the European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism (ESPEN) and the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) were stated to be most appropriate. ESPEN is the onlyguideline which takes into account age, and is also based on EFSA recommendations. This authority takes into consideration all fluids consumed (ranging from food to fluids).
