WHO GACVS COVID-19 subcommittee reviews cases of myocarditis after mRNA vaccines

The COVID-19 subcommittee of the WHO Global Advisory Committee on Vaccine Safety (GACVS) is looking into the reports of cases of myocarditis that have been reported in people who have received the COVID-19 mRNA vaccines. 

According to the subcommittee, in most of these reported cases, the individuals have recovered. The subcommittee is reviewing additional information to determine any link with COVID-19 vaccination.  On May 17, the US Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) COVID-19 Vaccine Safety Technical (VaST) Work Group had determined that there were some reports of myocarditis which appeared to occur more often in adolescents and young adults, predominantly in males. Additionally, they occurred more often following the second dose of the vaccine, usually during the 4 days following the jab. Most cases were mild and follow-up was being done. The GACVS subcommittee has determined that more studies will be needed to ascertain a potential causal link between the events and the vaccine… (WHO, May 26, 2021)
