EU authorizes Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine for adolescents

The European Commission has authorized the use of Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine in children 12 to 15 years of age, thus allowing for a wider vaccine roll-out. 

The move came after European Medicines Agency (EMA) supported the use of the vaccine in this age group. The vaccine is already being administered in the European Union in individuals 16 years of age and above.

The EMA stated that two doses of the vaccine have to be administered in the 12-15 year olds, which should be given at least three weeks apart. It further stated that it was for the individual EU states to decide if and when to give the vaccine to teenagers... (Reuters, May 28, 2021)
