India hastens vaccine supplies to fight COVID-19

The Serum Institute of India is set to raise the production of AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine by around 40% in the month of June, in a bid to alleviate a vaccine shortage that has affected the countrys fight against COVID-19.

Government officials and experts have stated that the only way the country can avoid a third wave of infections is by vaccinating most of its population against the coronavirus. The Serum Institute of India intends to make 90 million doses of AstraZeneca vaccine in June, up from around 65 million doses a month, reported a company spokesperson.

Meanwhile, Bharat Biotech is also planning to increase production of Covaxin to 23 million doses in June from just around 10 million in the month of April, stated a government official... (Reuters, May 31, 2021)
