A new article published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology stated that platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is an autologous blood product that has recently been used in multiple spheres of dermatology including facial rejuvenation, androgenetic alopecia, acne scars and wound healing. However, its use in melasma is comparatively an understudied topic.

The authors informed that PRP contains nearly 30 growth factors. Transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β) isamong the growth factors that have a predominant role in the treatment of melasma. TGF-β decreases tyrosinase and tyrosinase-related proteins. Furthermore, PRP also benefits by inducing collagen synthesis, thus, improving the quality and texture of the skin.

This article illustrated results from an extensive systematic literature search from the PubMed electronic database and Cochrane central register, of controlled trials relating PRP and melasma. The findings showed that PRP has been used effectively as a standalone treatment, as well as adjuvant therapyfor melasma. However, dataon large randomized controlled trials are scarce. Nevertheless, PRP is deemed as an excellent blood product for effective melasma treatment.
