Some Athletes Develop Subclinical Myocarditis Post-COVID

A new study found myocarditis in a small percentage of competitive athletes following COVID-19 infection, even in those without symptoms.

The cohort study of 1597 competitive collegiate athletes undergoing comprehensive cardiovascular testing in the United States noted the prevalence of clinical myocarditis of 0.31%, on the basis of a symptom-based screening strategy. However, the prevalence of clinical and subclinical myocarditis was found to increase by a factor of 7.4, to 2.3%, when screened using cardiac MRI.

Lead investigator Curt J. Daniels said that it was surprising that over half of the asymptomatic athletes had myocarditis, or as the investigators termed it,‘subclinical myocarditis.’ The study was published online May 27 in JAMA Cardiology… (Medscape)
