UK approves Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine for children aged 12 to 15 years

The UK regulator has granted approval for the use of Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine in children 12-15 years of age, and has stated that the vaccine appears to be safe and effective in this age group with the benefits outweighing any risks.

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) stated that it had meticulously reviewed the vaccine in adolescents. The UKs vaccines committee will now take a decision on whether children should get the shot.

Dr June Raine, chief executive of the MHRA, stated that the safety of the vaccine in this age group will be carefully monitored and no extension to an authorization would be given unless the safety, quality and effectiveness standards are met… (BBC, June 4, 2021)
