UK epidemiologist warns of substantial third wave based on data modelling

A top scientist associated with the UK’s decision to impose a complete stay-at-home lockdown during the first wave of the pandemic in 2020 has now cautioned that based on new data modelling, it seems that there is a risk of a substantial third wave in the country.

A leading epidemiologist from Imperial College London, Professor Neil Ferguson, stated that the estimated R number for the Delta variant of concern (VOC) is 1.5 to 1.6. This indicates that for every 10 individuals who get infected by the strain, another 15 or 16 people are at risk of contracting it.

The UK registered 7,540 COVID-19 infections over a 24-hour period on Wednesday, which is the highest since the end of February… (HT – PTI, June 10, 2021)
