Nine in ten African countries may miss urgent COVID-19 vaccination goal

The World Health Organization (WHO) says that 9 in 10 African countries are set to miss the September target of inoculating 10% of their populations against COVID-19.

With 32 million vaccine doses, Africa has administered less than 1% of the over 2.1 billion doses administered worldwide. A mere 2% of the continent’s around 1.3 billion population has received one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine. Just 9.4 million people in Africa are fully vaccinated. The agency stressed that 225 million vaccine doses are urgently required in Africa. 

The 54 countries on the African continent have recorded close to 5 million COVID-19 cases so far, and numbers spiked by around 20% - to over 88,000 - in the week ending 6 June… (UN, June 10, 2021)
