The huge second wave of COVID-19 in India is at present down to a quarter of its peak that was in early May. On Friday, the 7-day average of daily number of cases dropped below 1 lakh almost after 67 days to 95,101, a little less than one-fourth of the 3.9 lakh count that had reached at the height of the wave on 8th May.

As the increase in cases during the 2nd wave was very sharp and the drop so far has also been equally fast.It took only 34 days for the 7-day average of cases to drop to a fourth of the peak, almost three times faster than the reduction seen during the 1st wave of the coronavirus pandemic.

The death rate too has dropped to less than half of its peak count. The 7-day average of daily deaths fell below 2,000 on Thursday and dropped further to 1,920 by Friday. The peak death toll was 4,040 reported on 16th May.

On Friday, India had reported less than 85,000 new cases (Jharkhand number of cases were yet to come in), the lowest case count in 71 days since 1st April. The day’s death count stood at 1,781. On Friday, Tamil Nadu recorded the highest number of new cases at 15,759.
