New data from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) indicate that suspected suicide attempts rose significantly among teenage girls during the pandemic.

Among children and adolescents, 12 to 17 years of age, the average weekly emergency department (ED) visits for suspected suicide attempts were found to be 22.3% higher during summer of 2020 and 39.1% higher during winter of 2021, compared to the figures during the corresponding periods in 2019. Additionally, the spike was most marked among young girls. From February 21 to March 20 this year, the number of ED visits for suspected suicide attempts was about 51% higher among girls in the 12 to 17 years age group compared to during the same period in 2019.
